Friday 15th November: Celebrating the Science Week tree planting initiative, Minister of Communications, Climate Action & Environment Richard Bruton, TD; Dr Ruth Freeman, SFI Director, Science for Society, Science Foundation, Mark Carlin, Managing Director Coillte and Orla Farrell, Easy Treesie planted trees at Baldoyle Community Gardens as part of Science Week 2019.

Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) have launched a nationwide tree planting initiative as part of Science Week 2019. Focussing on climate action, Science Week 2019 is seeking to help people understand climate change, how science and technology can help us create a positive climate future and the impact we as individuals can have on climate change – including planting a tree! This tree planting initiative supports the national effort of planting 440 million trees by 2040.

Speaking about the initiative, Minister of Communications, Climate Action & Environment Richard Bruton, TD said: “Trees have a crucial role to play in our response to climate change. They are nature’s own carbon captors. As part of the Climate Action Plan we will plant 22 million trees every year for the next 20 years – that’s the equivalent of planting more than 6,000 Croke Park pitches every year until 2040. I am delighted that Science Foundation Ireland are joining the effort and encourage all young people to get involved in Science Week.”

There are a number of ways to get involved, information available on www.ScienceWeek.ie
